McDougall Trading Post

Currently located in the Kelowna Museum, 470 Queensway Avenue

Long before Kelowna became the city we know today, this small squared-log building played a role in shaping the Okanagan – on lands that have been home to the Syilx Okanagan people since time immemorial.

Built in 1861, the McDougall Trading Post is one of the oldest surviving buildings connected to Kelowna’s early settlement, second only to the Pandosy Mission. It was originally constructed on the Guisachan House property and served as a hub for the fur trade, linking Indigenous peoples, traders, and early settlers through commerce and exchange.

For the Syilx people, this land was already part of a deeply rooted network of relationships – to the land, to water, to community, and to seasonal movement and trade. The arrival of trading posts like this marked a significant shift, introducing new economic systems and interactions that would forever change the region.

Though the building has since been relocated to Downtown and reconstructed, its significance remains. The thick log walls, compact layout, and simple design reflect a time when buildings were shaped by necessity rather than comfort. Every element tells a story – not only of frontier survival and early economic activity, but also of a moment of transition on this land.

Standing here today, it’s hard to imagine a time when this modest structure represented the frontier of opportunity in the Okanagan. Yet this trading post helped lay the groundwork for the growth of Kelowna and the communities that followed.

This is a place where connection, commerce, and curiosity converged – and where the layered histories of this land continue to be felt.

Things to think about…
  • Is this building bigger or smaller than your home?
  • Why do you think the walls are made of logs?
  • Imagine arriving here in 1861. What would trade have looked like without roads, railways, or storefronts?
