Kelowna Club

Today, Home to the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society, 442 Leon Ave

Community isn’t built solely through work and industry. It’s also shaped by where people gather, connect, and belong — on lands that have been home to the Syilx Okanagan people since time immemorial.

This site reflects an important chapter in Kelowna’s social history. Originally home to the Kelowna Club, one of Canada’s oldest continuously operating social organizations, it served as a place where residents gathered to connect, exchange ideas, and build relationships beyond their day-to-day work. Founded in 1899 and formally incorporated in 1904, the Club played a role in shaping the city’s early social and professional networks.

The current building, completed in 1949, was designed in the Streamline Moderne style. Its bold, curved façade and welcoming entrance reflected a sense of optimism and progress in the post-war period, offering a space that was as much about experience as it was about function.

Over time, the role of this place has evolved. Today, it is home to the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Centre — a vital community space that supports Indigenous peoples through programs, services, and cultural connection. The carved poles at the entrance, created from yew trees originally on this site, stand as visible expressions of culture, identity, and presence.

This transformation reflects a broader shift toward inclusivity, recognition, and the importance of community care. While the building has changed, its purpose remains rooted in bringing people together.

In a place long shaped by the Syilx Okanagan people’s relationships to land, culture, and community, this site continues to be one of connection, belonging, and shared experience.
