BC Fruit Trees Ltd
Today, Home to Lorval Capital, 1473 Water Street
Kelowna’s reputation as a fruit-growing region didn’t happen by accident. It was built through coordination, innovation, and leadership — on lands that have been stewarded by the Syilx Okanagan people since time immemorial.
Constructed in 1946, this building became the headquarters of B.C. Tree Fruits Ltd., the central selling agency for interior-grown fruit. Formed in 1939 with the support of more than 90 percent of growers, the organization helped bring stability to the industry by ending years of competitive undercutting and creating a unified system for marketing Okanagan fruit.
Its construction came at a time of prosperity following the Second World War, often referred to as the “Golden Age” of the Okanagan fruit industry. As orchards expanded and demand increased, this building reflected both the confidence and the growing scale of the region’s agricultural economy.
Beyond sales, the building also housed key organizations like the B.C. Fruit Board and the B.C. Fruit Growers’ Association, making it a centre for decision-making, regulation, and advocacy within the industry.
Architecturally, the structure stands out as a strong example of Modernist design, with clean lines and a sense of forward momentum that mirrored the optimism of the time. Positioned at a key entry point into downtown, it helped define the city’s evolving identity.
While commercial agriculture reshaped the landscape and economy, this region has long been shaped by the Syilx Okanagan people’s deep relationship to land, food systems, and seasonal cycles — connections that continue today.
This site represents more than agriculture. It reflects the systems, leadership, and collective effort that helped establish Kelowna as a recognized fruit-growing region.
